Restaurants

Brussels has a wonderful selection of restaurants to choose from, offering everything from traditional Belgian fare to exotic Vietnamese and elegant French restaurants. Almost every major cuisine is represented here, and there are almost as many Michelin-star restaurants as in Paris. There are more than 1,700 restaurants in total throughout the city, and many neighbourhoods have their own particular specialty. The Rue des Bouchers and the nearby Petite rue des Bouchers are known for their excellent ethnic restaurants, and is one area not to miss. The establishments here tend to be very affordable food and of great quality. The Marché aux Poissons (fish market) area is another hot spot for restaurants, located near to the Grand Place, and featured seafood specialties. In any other area of the city, you will also find good places to dine.

The Belgian Cuisine
Belgium is known for hearty, unpretentious food of good quality. It is heavily influenced by the French cuisine, but has its own unique gourmet elements. Typical dishes often include meat and potatoes, and some traditional ones include rabbit in Gueuze (a beer from the Brussels area), Stoemp, a combination of potatoes, carrots and onion sauce, and Flemish Carbonades, a beef dish made with beer. Many dishes incorporate the typical Belgian Beers of the region, and beer itself is a specialty. Seafood is commonly used as well, and mussels are a particular favourite in Belgian cuisine. French fries, known here as frites, are said to be better here than anywhere else in Europe and are served in a surprising number of ways. There a number of small stands selling them throughout the city, usually located in busy squares and near shopping areas.
