Jumbo Hostel at Stockholm-Arlanda airport
After hotels on boats there is no a new alteration on the hotel market – the Jumbo Hostel – an old Boeing 747 which is being converted into a 25-room hostel at the Stockholm-Arlanda airport. The hostel will be open for customers in December 2008. The plane, which can take up to 350 passengers, will be able to accommodate 85 guests. The idea of hosting people in a so unusual location as an old airplane came from the Swedish businessman Oscar Dios who has been in the hotel business for 5 years and who used the lack of reasonably priced houses at the airport as a reason to find a adequate alternative.

When Dios heard about the Boeing 747 to be sold in 2006 he grasped the opportunity to propose his idea to the owners and the authorities. In June 2007 Dios possessed the plane which was moved to its final destination Arlanda Airport in August 2008.

In order to prepare the aircraft for its future destiny, the engines needed to be removed from the wings, the inside had to be cleared from unnecessary old equipment and instruments and a new refurbishment had to be installed. Of course, the new equipment needs to meet all the regulations that are also required for a normal house.

There will be two different kinds of accommodation, a basic room of about 6 m˛ which is suitable for three adults and costs around 110 € per night and a cockpit suite, which includes a private bathroom and a panoramic view. The suite costs around 500 €. People who just want to experience without staying a whole night can stay in the café suite for 25 €.
